When a solid material is stressed, imperfections within the
material may emit short bursts of energy called "emissions" or
“events”. In much the same manner as ultrasonic testing,
special receivers (sensors) can detect these acoustic
emissions. The source of "emissions" can be evaluated through
the study of their strength, frequency, dispersion, and
location.
